The Middle States Commission on Higher Education is an accrediting organization that has been around since 1919. The MSCHE focuses on granting accreditation status to schools that fall in what they term the middle region of the United States. These include the states of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania as well as Washington DC, Puerto Rico, United States Virgin Islands, and other locations overseas and abroad.
While the MSCHE is recognized by the United States Department of Education, it is not sponsored by the United States government. They are member-based and are completely private. This, however, does not devalue an accreditation by them. They have a staff filled with dedicated people who perform different functions such as reviewing the schools that desire accreditation by them. Their location in Pennsylvania suits their purpose of accrediting schools in the middle region.
The MSCHE has a carefully crafted set of criteria that they use to evaluate the schools. If the schools do not adhere to these criteria, they will not be granted accreditation by the MSCHE. If they do meet the criteria, they will be awarded the accreditation. From a student's perspective, if the school does not have an accreditation of any kind, this may mean that they have something lacking in their program.
