In recent years, distance education has become increasingly important when it comes to obtaining a degree or certificate or just taking courses to further your knowledge. The Distance Education and Training Council is devoted to making sure that these distance learning institutes are of the highest quality. What this translates to is that people who attend these schools will be taken seriously when applying for jobs and when using education from these institutes as part of their resumes. However, even though distance education has just recently taken off, the DETC itself has been around for a while. They were founded in 1926 as the National Home Study Council. They changed their name in 1994.
The DETC is listed as a nonprofit organization. This means that they are able to take donations for their continued growth and support. The accrediting commission of the DETC is responsible for reviewing distance learning institutes to make sure their programs are of the highest quality. This division has seven members who are responsible for these functions. It is important to note that both the United States Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation recognize the DETC for its excellence in accrediting distance learning programs.
Since distance education is very much a global endeavor, with the Internet making it possible for people all over the world to utilize these programs, the DETC accredits programs not only in the United States, but in other countries as well. These countries include Ireland, the United Kingdom, Japan, South Africa, and Canada. The DETC accredits high school diploma programs, college programs, and other distance learning programs.
