Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training (ACCET)

The Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training has been overseeing the quality of continuing educational programs since the 1970's. The agency's mission is to ensure that quality educational programs are available in communities all over the United States and abroad. The program has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education since 1978 and was the first recognized accrediting agency to attain the ISO 9001 Quality Management System designation under the International Organization for Standardization.

The self-regulating, Washington, D.C.-based agency focuses its attention on non-collegiate continuing educational programs and training operations. Schools and institutions that are eligible for ACCET review include private career schools, trade and professional associations, corporate training programs, religious organizations, labor union training programs, volunteer organizations and more. Organizations that award continuing education units, certificates and occupational associate degrees are also eligible for the peer review and accreditation that ACCET provides.

ACCET accreditation is considered valuable for programs, organizations and companies that offer continuing educational opportunities. The reasons include demonstrating the quality of the programming and the willingness of administration and faculty to have their programs and teaching techniques scrutinized for quality and feasibility.

ACCET is comprised of voluntary educational organizations that set forth standards for accreditation and review applications for accreditation. The agency sets forth a review process that delves into programs and institutions based on the quality of educational opportunities they provide. The evaluation process includes a self-evaluation, an on-site peer review, an independent review and more. The agency's overall mission is to promote and ensure the quality of continuing education programs.
